Behind the Scenes: How the Pallet Recycling Process Works
Every day, our facility processes approximately 5,000 used pallets. They arrive in every conceivable condition — some look nearly new, others appear ready for the scrap heap. But the recycling process we have refined over years of operation can return the vast majority of them to productive service. Here is how it works from start to finish.
Step 1: Collection and Receiving
Used pallets arrive at our facility through two primary channels: scheduled pickups from our buyback program partners, and drop-off deliveries from businesses managing their own pallet disposal. Truckloads typically contain 400-800 pallets in mixed condition. Each load is weighed, counted, and assigned a receiving lot number for traceability.
Step 2: Sorting and Grading
This is where human expertise matters most. Experienced sorters evaluate each pallet in seconds, assessing structural integrity, dimensional accuracy, and overall condition. Pallets are separated into three streams: ready to resell (Grade A — no repairs needed), repairable (Grade B/C potential — structurally sound but need board replacement or stringer repair), and material recovery (too damaged for repair — dismantled for usable lumber or ground into mulch and biomass).
Step 3: Repair and Reconditioning
Pallets flagged for repair move to our repair line, where technicians replace damaged deck boards, repair cracked stringers, and re-nail loose components. A skilled repair technician can process 80-120 pallets per hour using pneumatic nail guns and pre-cut replacement lumber. Every repaired pallet undergoes a final quality inspection before it enters inventory.
Step 4: Treatment and Compliance
Pallets destined for export or food-contact applications go through our ISPM 15 heat treatment chamber. The kiln maintains a core temperature of 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, after which each pallet is stamped with our certified ISPM 15 mark. We process approximately 800 pallets per heat treatment cycle.
Step 5: Inventory and Deployment
Finished pallets are inventoried by size, grade, and treatment status, then stored in our outdoor yard organized by category. When an order comes in, we pick from the appropriate inventory pool, load for delivery, and dispatch. Our fleet handles deliveries within a 150-mile radius, with larger orders shipped via common carrier.
- Approximately 70% of received pallets are returned to service after repair
- Another 20% are dismantled for component lumber used in repairs
- The remaining 10% are ground into mulch, animal bedding, or biomass fuel
- Nothing goes to landfill — every piece of wood finds a productive next use
The entire process, from receiving to shipping, typically takes 2-5 business days. This turnaround allows us to maintain a rolling inventory of 40,000-60,000 pallets ready for immediate delivery — enough to handle most orders within 24-48 hours of receiving a purchase order.
